Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
This last week was for the dogs...
Literally!

We spent last weekend down at a rescue facility looking at dogs. It all started with a picture of a Corgi/Lab mix that was too cute. I keep thinking that I need to down-size and have smaller dogs, but it never happens. That little cutie had already been adopted, which I tried to take as a sign that I didn't need another dog. Saturday, tourist traffic was terrible and a 30 minute drive took well over an hour, maybe two, so we got there too late to do anything but look at the dogs, no chance to meet or adopt... I took this as another sign that I did not need another dog. At this point, I had a 1-1/2 year old Shar Pei/Lab/Shepard mix and an 11 year old yellow lab. Sunday, we found ourselves back down at the rescue facility and meeting and adopting a one year old, 60 pound Lab/Poodle mix (a.k.a. Labradoodle) named Emma.

Emma and our 1-1/2 year old mix were instant friends, which was good because on Tuesday, Sadie, our yellow lab finally succumbed to old age. We will all miss her. But, everyone says 11 years is a long life for a Lab, so I am trying to focus on that.

ohh, broom, I am so sorry for your loss. When an old friend goes it is so terribly hard! We had to put our 11 year old Rott down a few monthes ago due to cancer and her being in extreme pain, it was one of the hardest things I've ever done. I still miss her. :(

The Labradoodle is adorable! I'm glad you were able to adopt another pup, she'll help with the grieving.

We have sister and brother mutts that we rescued and they helped tremendously when I'm missing Tina!

I had to make the decision to put her down, which is never easy (it is the second time I have had to make that decision for a pet), but of course, one cannot watch them suffer either. I am sorry you had to go through this too, and of course you still miss her. I still look for Sadie when I get up and when I let the dogs in and out.

I am glad that we got the Ladbradoodle before, because I am sure it has helped the other dog with mourning (I think she would have been terribly sad without Sadie otherwise), and afterwards, I don't think I could have gone out and adopted a dog (at least not quickly).

Aw, you adopted a sister and brother; I am sure they are very happy that you kept them together. Rescued mutts are the best (even if their mutty mix has become a fancy name, like Labradoodle *g*).

Awww, bcr, so sorry about your lab. But eleven years? Wowza! That's great...but I know it's still hard.

Special blessings to you for rescuing pound puppies! My two are sitting on either side of me as I write this (poodle and bichon.) As my mother always said to us, "That's another lucky dog you've rescued!"

Thanks. It is hard, we had her for six years--she actually came with our house when we bought it. *grins* But, even though that is a funny story, it is sad to think of her not being here.

Yes, pound puppies (or dogs), a pound cat, and guinea pig. hehe. Oh, I bet yours are too cute. I love bichons (or bichon mixes). I keep trying to get smaller dogs (corgi/mix, bichon/mix) but I always end up adopting larger dogs. Go figure.

So sorry to hear about your dog. I have had to make those decisions too and it is always a hard choice to make. The new labradoodle looks like a sweetie! Sending you lots of healing vibes to get through this tough time! ((hug))

Thanks. It is a hard choice, but then you can't just sit by and watch them suffer either--it is a terrible catch 22. *sniffles and commiserates*

The labradoodle is silly. We seem to attract all the ridiculously goofy dogs, but she is a sweetie and has that grateful demeanor of most rescued dogs (I say most rescued dogs because, for some reason, our Shar Pei/Lab/Shepard mix has a sense of entitlement. LOL. Maybe she wasn't homeless for very long. *g*

I am so, so sorry for your loss. Giving a home to a pet that needs one is a wonderful tribute. She looks very happy.

Thank you. I suppose it did turn into a tribute, even though we did adopt first. At least, it is keeping our younger dog from mourning the loss of her friend too much (she is still a bit sad, but eating and playing, so I think she will be OK).

*hugs* to you for the passing of Sadie! My elder statesdog, also a lab, is 11 now, and I'm all for keeping her a few more years. She's still in pretty good health, so I'm hopeful. But I'm very sad for you ~ I'm glad that you have a new pup to keep things joyful at your house now!

Thanks. Eleven is old for a large dog, but I have seen large dogs live until 14, so hopefully your lab will continue being happy and healthy for a few more years. I think the other pup will keep the younger dog happy (although I do see times of sadness from her), and keeps us busy, but I still look for Sadie when I get up and let the dogs in and out. And, of course, you will notice, once again, I ended up with a larger dog. *g*

I'm so sorry about Sadie, but she lived a good life with you. I'm glad you adopted Emma, she is so cute, and I think it's the best you can do in memory of a beloved pet. There are so many who need our help.

And your layout is so cool.

Thank you. Sadie did have a good, long life for a large dog. Emma was adopted while Sadie was still here, so she got to at least meet her for a few days. I think it has really helped the younger dog not miss Sadie so much. And, it is true, there are so many homeless animals, it is hard to pick just one.

I still may play with the layout a bit, and I still need to make an icon, but I had to do somthing with my cool SS/HG exchange gift. :)
